What does TENS mean?
TENS is the abbreviation of the term “Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation”. “Transcutaneous” means “through the skin”. A TENS device generates small electrical pulses which are sent through the skin via skin electrodes. These pulses stimulate certain types of “fast” nerves and in so doing block out the transmission signals to the brain of other slower “pain” carrying nerves (Pain Gate Control principle). TENS can also be used at certain frequencies to stimulate the release of endorphins which are the body’s own pain relieving hormones. TENS is a clinically proven method of relieving pain. It provides an ideal weapon in the management of acute and chronic pain, often allowing patients to reduce their intake of chemical based analgesics and anti-inflammatories.

When is the use of Electrical Stimulation not recommended?
People with implanted electronic instruments (e.g. a pacemaker) or those suffering other symptoms of cardiac disease, injury or abnormality (e.g. disorders of the cardiac rhythm) must always seek the authorization of their medical doctor or specialist before using electro-stimulation. The safety of electrical muscle stimulation has not been tested in pregnant women or in people suffering from epilepsy – therefore as a precaution, its use is not recommended. Cancer patients should check carefully with their treating physician before using Electrical stimulators. Please carefully follow the recommendations appearing in the instructions for use supplied with every neurotech product. neurotech® may not be held responsible for the safety, reliability and performance of its devices unless they are used in accordance with the recommendations.
